    Persian New Year 2016 | Norooz 1395

    March 7, 2016
    I have been anticipating this Persian New Year {1395} since last year Persian New Year because I knew this one would be the most exciting one for me now having my daughter Sienna here. Last year I was very pregnant and with all of my might and swollen feet I managed to prettify a Haftseen as it’s a favorite holiday for me and a huge deep rooted tradition for us Iranians.

    I wanted to prettify a spread a little different than my usual interest in neutral hues. My daughter adds so much color to my life and I wanted my Haftseen to reflect exactly that.

    As always, here is a brief breakdown of what the items on the Haftseen symbolize:

    {HAFTSEEN SPREAD}

    sabzeh – wheat or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolizing growth
    samanoo – a sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolizing wealth
    senjed – the dried fruit of the oleaster tree – symbolizing love
    seer – garlic – symbolizing medicine
    seeb – apples – symbolizing beauty and health
    serkeh – vinegar – symbolizing age and patience
    sekkeh – coins – prosperity and wealth
    sonbol – hyacinth flower symbolizing the start of spring
    sumac – symbolizing the sunrise

    {OTHER ITEMS THAT ARE ALSO USED ON THE SPREAD}

    a mirror and lit candles – symbolizing enlightenment and happiness
    decorated eggs – symbolizing fertility
    a bowl with goldfish – symbolizing life
    holy book {depending on faith} – symbolizing God’s blessing

    As we embark on another year, I wish my readers who celebrate a very happy and healthy new year! Aideh Noroozeh hamehgee mobarak!
